How homecare works
What is homecare?

Homecare is a type of professional care given in a service user’s home. Visiting carers will attend the property at an agreed time to provide support, ranging from lunchtime companionship to overnight complex homecare.
In-home care has become an increasingly popular alternative to residential care homes, as it enables individuals to live independently while receiving the care they need.
Many service users respond more positively to care in a familiar environment. Being in their own home can foster confidence and autonomy despite illness, challenges, or disabilities.
Why might people need homecare?

At Helping Hands, we understand that no two service users are the same. Homecare service users come in all shapes, sizes, and ages, and this is something we champion with our fully adaptable homecare services.
We provide homecare to:
- Individuals recovering from illnesses
- Individuals recovering from injuries
- Individuals with disabilities
- Individuals with complex medical needs
- Individuals requiring long-term care support
We know that flexibility and adaptability are essential for the benefit of our service users and their families. This is why we develop bespoke homecare plans, precisely tailored to each service user’s needs, goals, and preferences.
How does homecare work at Helping Hands?
Researching homecare providers for the first time can be a stressful task. This is why we like to keep our process as simple as possible, easing the transition to homecare in any way we can.

Step one: Make an enquiry
To make a referral, all you need to do is contact your nearest Helping Hands branch. We cover West Northumberland and East Northumberland.
You can either call, email, or submit our quick online form, and a member of our friendly team will be in touch as soon as possible.
Step two: Attend your free, no-obligation initial assessment
Free at-home assessments are included as standard within our process. We will visit your home or that of your loved one to learn more about the service user’s care needs.
We’ll ask some informal questions about the service user’s challenges, preferences, and requirements so we can see which of our homecare services would be a good fit.
This is also an excellent chance for family members and loved ones to share their opinions and express any concerns. Our team will be more than happy to listen and offer peace of mind.

Step three: Choose your preferred services and delivery methods
At this point, the service user will also decide on their preferred homecare services and delivery methods. Our delivery methods include:
- Day homecare
- Overnight homecare
- Couples’ homecare
These delivery methods are fully flexible and can be combined or reduced as and when required.
Step four: We’ll develop a fully bespoke homecare plan
Using all the information provided, our team of qualified and insured visiting carers will create a fully tailored care plan suited to the needs of the service user.
This care plan is always shared with the service user and their loved ones, and it usually includes:
- The specific homecare services required
- Chosen delivery methods
- Preferred times
- Any useful things to note, such as preferences, medical information, dietary requirements, etc.

FAQs
Can you offer multiple homecare services at once?
Absolutely. It is very normal for service users to require more than one form of support, so we are very confident in delivering multiple services to a high standard.
Can you give care updates to family members?
Transparent communication is extremely important to us, and we care for the families just as much as our service users. We can provide regular updates and encourage open and honest communication at all times.
When will I find out how much homecare costs?
We will give you a full breakdown of costs following the free homecare assessment. We can also provide guidance regarding homecare funding, as we appreciate that this is a concern for many.
